Sažetak
Since the begining of 1997, IDD control intervention programe in Croatia is conducted by fortification of all salt intended for human consumption and animal feed with 25 mg of KI per kg of salt. One of the basic purposes of IDD surveillance is to determine the magnitude and distribution of IDD within the population. Besides the epidemiological criteria for assessing the size of IDD problems on the basis of goiter prevalence in the schoolchildren population and urinary iodine excretion, important public health iodine deficiency indicator is the level of TSH in full blood of newborns. TSH levels obtained from newborns were compared to the cut off points that are considered indicative of potential public health problems in regard to the severity of IDD. According to those criteria data indicate that Croatia in general could be classified as a country having the presence of mild to moderate IDD problem (one county could be classified as having moderate IDD problem ) , while in three counties there were no existing problems of IDD and the rest of country had the presence of mild IDD public health problem.
