Sažetak
Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a mycotoxin produced by Aspergillus ochraceus and is a natural contaminant of moldy food. An increased presence of this toxin has been found in various foodstuffs in the area characterized by the occurence of endemic nephropathy. We therefore have decided to clarify the following questions: whether the presence of OTA in a relatively low concentration taken in food over a prolonged period of time also leads to toxic alteration in rats similar to subclinical phase of endemic nephropathy and what is significance of urinary glycosaminoglycans and chondroitin sulfate/heparan sulfate ratio as a diagnostic parameters. We conclude that treatments of rats with low doses of ochratoxin A resulted in kidney impairment with no differences in urinary glycosaminoglycans. Therefore, urinary glycosaminoglycans are not enough sensitive and specific diagnostic parameters of kidney alterations induced with low doses of Ochratoxin A.
