Sažetak
This paper is contrastive analysis of visual metaphors in English and Croatian with the purpose of finding differences and similarities between them. It consists of two parts. In the theoretical part a general approach to metaphor is discussed by presenting cognitive linguistics as a branch of linguistics that gives a special attention to the study of metaphors and metonymies. Metaphor and metonymy are presented from the cognitive linguistics view, which is compared to the traditional one. One chapter deals with non-linguistic realizations of conceptual metaphors, mainly visual. The second part of the paper presents the contrastive analysis showing differences and similarities between visual metaphors in English and Croatian. Both languages generally share all the conceptual metaphors presented in this paper. The more similar the culture and the civilisation of the users of two different languages, the greater resemblance there will be between the conceptual metaphors covered by their language. Thus, abstract concepts are conceived of in similar ways. When it comes to lexical realizations of the given metaphors, there are differences that occur when one language does not have the right equivalent for the expression in the source language. Summing up, one can say that English and Croatian have, to a large extent, identical metaphorical expressions. These arise from similar experiential bases, universal physiological responses and similar social values.
