Sažetak
This paper presents the research based on the influence of constant temperature (10, 15 and 20oC, respectively) on the early growth of three Croatian maize hybrids in growth chamber conditions. The effect of seed size and shape (Revilla et al, 1999 ; Martinelli et al, 1999 ; Batistella et al, 2002), as well as the seed harvest year showed significant influence on shoot height, root length, their fresh mass and dry matter content, as well as their ratios (Rvd – shoot height/root length ; Rsm- shoot/root fresh mass ratio ; Rst- shoot/root dry matter content). Lower temperature significantly inhibited growth, as reported by Pritchard et al (1990), but the phenotypic response depended on maize genotype, seed size and shape and seed vigour, indicating different potential of cold resistance.
