Sažetak
By examining English and Croatian idioms of happiness, this paper has attempted to support the conceptual theory developed by cognitive linguists which claims that our thinking is metaphorical and that it is reflected in the language we use. Also, it was supposed to become clear that idioms of happiness are motivated by three cognitive mechanisms, i.e., general knowledge, conceptual metaphors and metonymies. It can be concluded that most idioms of happiness are conceptually motivated, and that people make sense of their figurative meaning with the help of the mentioned conceptual mechanisms. The paper also showed that English and Croatian share the same conceptual metaphors for expressions of happiness.
