Sažetak
In aqueous electrolyte solution surface of ice undergoes electrical charging due to interactions with H+ and OH ions. Electrical interfacial layer at the interface is similar as for metal oxide aqueous interface. The charging process could be explained on the basis of the Surface Complexation Model. The isoelectric point of ice lies between pH 3 and 4 so that in the broad pH region the ice surface is negatively charged. The negative surface sites bind positive counterions, while in the low pH-region (below pH 3) the positive surface sites bind negatively charged counterions. Electrical properties at the ice-water interface are related to other interfacial properties, such as hydrophobicity. Atmospheric phenomena, such as charge separation in thunderclouds, can be related to charging processes at the ice-aqueous electrolyte interface.
