Sažetak
The concept of sustainable development as an integral approach seems to be the only alternative for the conflict and collision between ecology and economy. Considering that tourism is one of the most important economic activity with significant influence in all areas, but in the same time directly connected with protected natural environment in the paper will be emphasised application of sustainable development concept in the sphere of tourism. The tourism industry depends on the quality of natural, built and cultural resources in destination area and therefore it is expected that the industry would actively promote sustainable forms of tourism. Tourism consumes scarce resources and generates waste, producing in such ways adverse environmental and social impacts. It is appropriate to ask why the implementation of environmental and social measures by the tourism industry has been relatively limited. The economic, environmental and social questions are those on which to hang the development planning and management of objectives in general as well as tourism planning. The purpose of the paper is to try to determinate strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats for sustainable tourism development in Istria County and answer to the question – who should be responsible for implementing tourism sustainable development measures.
