Sažetak
Oceanographic Information System is GIS (Geographic Information System) which includes computer hardware and software, processes, people and data. OIS supports the acquisition, management, analysis and visualization of spatially referenced oceanographic data for solving a complex planning and management problem. At the Hydrographic Institute of the Republic of Croatia OIS is a part of HYDRIS (Hydrographic Information System) – the official geographic information system. The HYDRIS includes several subsystems: the nautical, hydrographic, cartographic nad oceanographic one. Oceanographic Information System is object oriented and includes several subsystems: -physical oceanography (temperature, salinity, density, transparency and colour of the sea, sea level data, currents, wind generated surface waves) ; -marine meteorology (air temperature and pressure, humidity, wind, visibility, cloud amount, sea state) ; -chemical oceanography (oxygen , pH factor, nutrient salts, heavy metals) ; -marine geology (granulometric characteristics of the seabed sediments) ; and -geophysical (elements of magnetic field). All these systems and subsystems correspond mutually. The purpose of the OIS is carrying out oceanographic activities in the Adriatic Sea in order to provide safety of navigation and protect marine environment. The Adriatic Sea is an elongated basin, ca. 800 km long and 200 km wide. Eastern part of this basin is under the jurisdiction of the Republic of Croatia. A thousand islands and more than 5 000 km of coastline, numberless straits, passages and other areas dangerous for navigation and important for marine environment protection, along the east coast of the Adriatic Sea, render this region an exceptionally complex area. It therefore needs long time oceanographic measurements and updating of OIS data.
