Sažetak
Background With growth of trade and industry in XVIII century, a need for quaraintine raised because of cholera imported often from overseas to small local ports at the Adriatic sea. A quaraintine as isolational hospital had named « ; Lasaret» ; after St. Lasarus, protector from lepra. Results King Carlo XVI declared Rijeka as free port in 1719. In 1722. had initiated and in 1726 had finished a quarantine building outside the western city walls. The Lasaret had been operative since 1812. when quairantine moved to Kraljevica. In 1833 the Lasaret had moved to new buildings in Martinšćica bay, closer to city. The old King Carlo's building in Rijeka was used by army, and then by emerging industry in the west of the city. For example, ships, men and goods were quarantined because of cholera in Italy in July of 1873 ; pest in southern Mediterrain in June of 1874 ; cholera in Mooroco in January of 1879 ; yellow fever in United States in August of 1879. The Lasaret was operative since the World War the first, and then the building complex was used by army. After the war, army used the complex since 1925. After that, the Lasaret complex was in civil service until 1941. when begun World War the second. After the war, army used the complex since 1947, and after that since today by industry. In 1960 had finished but never put operative a new quaraintine station. Through the 20th century a need for quaraintine dedicated building complex disapeared. In Lasarets served staff with special education in service of disinfection of goods and surveillance of seamen. With growth of public health network in Croatia during 1920's special hygiencal procedures were applyed in control of potential importing of infectious diseases by sea travel. Conclusions Nowadays, the Institute of Public Health and the Sanitary inspection of Primorsko-goranska county are in charge for the control.
