Sažetak
The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of and qualityof endodontically treated teeth and apical periodontitis in a Croatian urban population Radiographs of 675 first-time patients from four different dental offices in Zagreb were examined. The occurrence and technical quality of root fillings were assessed for each root according to the position and the density of the obturation. The periapical status was evaluated using the Periapical Index Scoring System. The data were statistically analyzed and differences were tested by ANOVA i Scheffe Post Hoc test. A total of 17983 teeth were examined: of these 1017 (5.6 %) were endodontically treated and 1449 (8.0%) had apical periodontitis (PAI ≥ 3). Molars were the most often treated teeth (424 – 41.7%), then premolars (355 – 34.9%) and at least anterior teeth (237- 23.5%). Root- filling ending more than five mm from radiological apex was observed in 530 (21.6%) roots. Two to five mm short root canal filling was present in 726 (29.5%) roots. Root- filling ending two mm or less from apex was found in 838 (34.0%) roots. Excess of root-filling beyond apex was noticed in 96 (3.9%) roots, and 269 (10.9%) roots were with radiopaque material in pulp chamber and/or orifice of root canal. Adequate obturation with homogenous radiopaque material in the root canal without space between material and walls of canal was observed in 882 (35.8%) roots. According age and sex there was no difference in frequency of endodontically treated teeth. High prevalence of periapical periodontis and only 34.0% of roots with root-filling ending two mm or less from apex and 35.8% well obturated roots were found in this study.
