Sažetak
In this paper a comparative analysis of growth and development of two countries, namely the Republic of Ireland and the Republic of Croatia, will be presented. Ireland’ s catch up process is often regarded as an example of successful development to which many small countries especially from central, eastern and south-eastern Europe are looking up. However, not everything is perfect and not everything looks as it actually is. A (forced) catch-up process does not necessarily have to be sustainable. Croatia is at the other end of the catch-up process, mainly due to major difficulties experienced in the 1990ties. In perspective, Croatian economic growth still seems to be too slow for catching-up, but expectations are growing as Croatia became a candidate country of the EU in June 2004. Therefore, the main question refers to the applicability and relevance of the Irish development model to the case of Croatia. Firstly, two theoretical concepts will be discussed - the catch-up model and the sustainable development model. Then, an analysis of Ireland’ s exogenous and endogenous growth factors will be reviewed, as well as Croatia’ s exogenous and endogenous growth potentials. The analysis will consider also cultural-historic, socio-economic and spatial aspects of both countries. The main goal of this paper is to identify strengths and weaknesses of the Irish catch-up model with regard to the aspect of sustainability, and to derive at useful lessons for Croatia.
