Sažetak
Literature describes different long-term psychological outcomes for children with early pre-perinatal brain injuries. It is known that many children at neurodevelopmental risk, even years after the lesion onset, show subtle cognitive deficits that interfere with their academic performance. Within our longitudinal research project Communication and Language Development in Children with Early Brain Lesions we conducted a microdevelopmental research on relations between early memory abilies with later cognitive and language functions. We guestioned if the features of early memory could be seen as a risk/resiliance for later development. Therefore, the research is trying to prove predictive value of the earliest memory abilities for later memory and language outcome. The research was conducted in two time points. A subset of children with pre-perinatal brain lesions (n=6) was first seen at the age of 12 months when general (Bayley Scales of Infant Development) and (pre-) verbal development (MacArthur Communicative Developmental Inventory) were assessed. In order to investigate early memory features AB task was administred. Second part of the research is done on the same subjects in the preschool age (5-6 years). At this point, memory abilities were defined using Digit Span and Visual Segmental Memory (ITPA) and language functions were assessed through Token Test and Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT). All the subjects were also included in a neuropediatrical follow-up. Results at the age of 12 months indicate that subjects at neurodevelopmental factors showed lower results on the AB task (shorter delays) than healthy subjects. There was no clear connection between performance on the AB task and language measures which points to possible separate developmental trajectories of the working memory. Second part of the study is still in the process, the results will be presented on the symposium with special emphasis on analysing relations between early memory features and later language and cognitive abilities.
