Sažetak
Although the overcharging system complicates the production of an engine as well as later on the maintenance and supervision, it also enhances engine power up to 50%, which makes the development of such systems obviously interesting. Modern mid and large-size marine engines are most of the times equipped with turbocharger and gas turbine, whose power amounts to 20% of the power of the engine. This kind of overcharging system utilizes part of exhaust gases inner energy (that would be otherwise lost in the environment) for compression of air delivered in the engine cylinders. This system was developed from the “Buchi” turbocharging system by Brown-Boveri. This paper considers two basic methods of turbocharging: static and impulse, with some modified versions of impulse turbochargers. The theoretical analysis is based on thermodynamic laws, and some practical solutions to the turbochargers for different types of engines are presented separately. Although the theoretical analysis implies that the impulse overcharging with the use of exhaust gases kinetic energy is more efficient and economical, practice has shown that in slow-turning engines the static overcharging with constant pressure on the turbine inlet is much more convenient than the impulse overcharging.
