Sažetak
Developmental outcomes of children with intrauterine growth retaradation (IUGR, birthweight < 10. c) have just recently been closely studied. Studies have shown that statistically higher proportions of children with IUGR (relative to their peers) are having school problems as defined by grade repetition or placement in special education programs. This could be due to general cognitive deficiency or due to selective impairments in areas such as language abilities, memory, attention, perceptual-motor skills, and nonverbal reasoning and problem solving. Also, those children show difficulties in domain of fine and gross motor coordination. The study is designed to explore neurodevelopmental, cognitive and language development outcome in children with IUGR. Twenty children aged four to seven with IUGR are assessed. Children are included in comprehensive assessment ; neurological functioning was examined by the method of Touwen and classified in four categories ; methods of psychological and language development evaluation include number of different tests (WPPSI-III, PPVT, ITPA, Token Test) and memory and phonological tasks. Previous studies of children with IUGR have shown that they achieve lower scores on standard intelligence scales and have poorer language skills that can influence their later academical achievement. Our result will be discussed based on how IUGR influence the skills that are predictive of school achivement in a reference to possible relation with neurodevelopmental outcome. In summary, our study shows the importance of early assessment of children with IUGR which could help to prevent learning difficulties that are present in that population.
