Sažetak
The association Stipo-Salvietum officinalis H-ić (1956) 1958 (=Brometo-Chrysopogonetum grylli H-ić 1934 p. p.), widely distributed along the whole of the Croatian part of the Adriatic coast, is one of the most frequent grassland communities in the Mediterranean region. From the literature and from field research, 149 relevés were collected in which a total of 366 plant taxa were registered. The most frequent plant species in the floristic composition of the association are: Salvia officinalis, Bromus erectus, Helichrysum italicum, Brachypodium retusum, Aethionema saxatile, Teucrium montanum, Asparagus acutifolius, and Dactylis glomerata subsp. hispanica. The association is recognisable on the basis of two characteristic species: Salvia officinalis and Stipa bromoides. Botanists hold diverse views about how the association relates in phytosociology terms to higher syntaxonomic categories, which indicates the need for further phytosociological research and classification. The association constitutes a stone waste pasture vegetation that shows considerably diversity of plant species, particularly when the fairly extreme habitat conditions are considered. It usually develops on hill slopes on sparse soil the surface of which is dominated by stable or unstable stone. The surfaces of this community are usually exposed to the powerful action of the wind – the bora, to very great oscillations in temperature and to a paucity of water, which is not retained in the permeable and skeletal soil. Stands of this association are used for the grazing of sheep and goats, as good bee pasture and for the collection of medicinal herbs. In order to eliminate plants that are not suitable for grazing, vegetation of this community is in some places burned at intervals of several years. However, there are ever more frequent cases of the traditional animal husbandry being abandoned, in which case the areas of this association are subject to natural succession and are overgrown into garrigues and maquis. Hence habitats of this type of pasture vegetation can be considered potentially endangered.
