Sažetak
Ionising radiation has a destructive effect on the content of living cells, but the exact mehanism is still being investigated. Gamma irradiation is the most effective, economically and readily available commercial method of sterilisation, mikrobial decontamination. The source of irradiation is Cobalt 60, the dose of exposure is simply a function of exposure time and the control is accurate. The question is: what is the difference between unirradiated and irradiated herbal drugs, food, and pharmaceutical preparations? Thorough physical, chemical and biological testing is required before this method can be prescribed for preparations. Since it has a destructive effect on the mucilage content of Althaea radix, the gamma irradiation method can not be prescribed for decontamination of this herbal drug.
