Sažetak
For more than one decade, unemployment has persisted as a major social and economic problem in Croatia. Its characteristics are: the high rate of registered unemployment (around 22%), a large number of long-term unemployed individuals (roundly 58% of unemployed persons have been unemployed for longer than a year), and the presence of gray or underground economy. On this societal condition, many unemployed job seekers have little chance to find a job soon and are in danger to suffer mental health deterioration. Consequently, their impaired psychological wellbeing, determined by negative impact of unemployment for a long period, mediates their job search behavior and, in the end, dim hopes for their reentering the labor force. It is therefore important to find out living circumstances and individual characteristics which determine mental health status of unemployed in the conditions of high unemployment rates and socioeconomic crisis. It was the purpose of this paper. The questionnaire comprising measures of demographic variables, length of unemployment, work-related attitudes, day-to- day activities, job search behavior, financial strain and subjective mental health was applied on the representative national sample of registered unemployed persons (N=1, 138). Results revealed significant factors which differentiate individuals with high and low subjective mental health scores, with age and financial strain showing the largest contribution to the derived discriminant function.
