Sažetak
Numerous texts concerning Greco-Roman, Arabian, European or Croatian history of medicine are identified in manuscripts, incunabula and the oldest printed books written by Croats or by foreign authors and physicians who lived and worked on the territory of Croatia and in the surrounding countries. History of Medicine had its place in the cur-riculum of medical schools in Croatia founded in the beginning of the 19th century. After the foundation of the Croatian Medical Association in 1874 interest for international, primarily European and national Croatian medical heritage has increased. But not primarily and excessively for the purpose of establishing history of medicine as an independent scientific discipline. A breakthrough occurs in 1927 when a course of lectures on History of Medicine was introduced at the Medical Faculty University of Zagreb. However that was the beginning of the establishment and development of History of Medicine as an academic scientific and educational discipline and profession at the Slavic South. Internationally its relevance was recognised by granting Zagreb to organise the 11th International Congress for the History of Medicine that started in Zagreb September the 1st 1938.
