historical physics teaching experiments; First Croatian High School of Susak
Sažetak
The First Croatian High School of Sušak in Rijeka, which sprang from the Jesuit High School dating back to 1627, has one of the oldest collection of historical physics teaching experiments in Croatia, with a number of old, rare and well kept physics teaching devices. The beginning of physics teaching in Rijeka reaches back to the beginning of 19th century. Physics, as a separate subject, was first taught at High School in Rijeka in 1855. as ” Naturgeschichte Physik” . The first professors of physics put together a collection of physics experiments and apparatus which they kept expanding and upgrading. Thus in 1868, only 17 years after Foucault’ s demonstration of the rotation of the earth in Paris, now called Foucault's Pendulum, the High School in Rijeka procured a massive pendulum. Most of the historical teaching experiments were supplied at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Approximately half of the original collection of physics apparatus is still in possession of the school (moreover, some of those are still in use for demonstrations) and it represents a significant cultural and scientific heritage. Public interest for physics can be stimulated not only by presenting modern, advanced experiments but also by an appropriate presentation of historical ideas.
