Sažetak
Much evidence shows that somatostatin plays a significant role in the circuit that exists between the neuroendocrine and immune system. Its mostly immunosuppressive effects may be related to its capacity: 1) to modulate the release and action of various neurotransmitters, hormones and cytokines which affect the lymphatic functions ; 2) to act directly on receptors of lymphocytes and other cells participating in immune response, and/or 3) to change the other events related to the function of lymphatic organs such as blood flow, vascular permeability or lymphocyte traffic. Its widespread localization and multispecifity of action emphasize its importance for the maintenance of neuro-endocrino-immune homeostasis.
