Sažetak
An active intervention of oncogenesis by RNA tumor viruses can be achieved immunologically, as well as chemotherapeutically. The immunological approach is limited, however, to intervention with cell-virus recognition, and the subsequent penetration of the virus. This can be achieved using vaccines to inactivated particles or employing purified viral proteins. The chemical inhibition of the oncogenic events of RNA tumor viruses is possible at several stages of the life cycle of these viruses. To specify the possible targets for such inhibitors, we need to know the chemistry of the viral replicating machinery and its genetic or environmental modulations. Some of these aspects, although significant progress has been made, are still poorely understood. However, some of the molecular processes in the life cycle of oncornaviruses such as: a) proviral DNA formation by viral reverse transcriptase ; and b) expression of the proviral gene are now well understood. Not well understood are the mechanisms involved in the integration of proviral DNA into the genome of the host. As a consequence, most of the work on chemical inhibitors has been directed towards the two known processes.
