In this text we ll initially consider the forest as a store of wealth, or capital. In that sense, a forest is like a certificate of deposit or a stock you buy in the hope that, over time, it will return more money than you paid for it. Obviously, forests are much more than that and yield other benefits. But the financial view is a useful framework into which we can later weave nonmonetary aspects. Futhermore, many investitors own forestland mainly for its economical returns. Forestry is so capital-intensive that thoroughly understanding capital theory applied to forestry is vital before delving deeper into other aspects of forest economics. In a financial sense, if you consider trees and land as capital, two of the most important inputs into forestry are capital and time.
