Sažetak
A ratio of specially protected inland and marine areas is not proportional to the total area of land and territorial sea of the Republic of Croatia. Following the proposal for the Strategy of Physical Planning of the Republic of Croatia (1996), the ratio would be even worse because the proposal does not foresee adequate enlargement of specially protected marine areas. The problem of sea protection should always be included in water protection in the whole of our country.
Many years of overfishing and different undertakings in the coastal area have been directly destroying shallow marine zone where settlements of seagrass have been developed as well as other areas important for spawning and growth of economically significant marine species. By their destruction the renewable biological resources and marine biodiversity of Adriatic Sea have been seriously endangered.
Due to insufficient knowledge as well as to non-consideration of hydrological and biological characteristics of marine ecosystems, irrecoverable damage was done in the large part of the Northern Adriatic. We point out to the importance of integrated management of the coastal zone, in which special attention should be paid to preserved, economically and ecologically valuable and touristically appealing coastal zone coastal zone with islands and the surrounding submarine area.
However, the negative impact of uncontrolled urban, industrial and tourist development and the lack of appropriate environmental strategies are now becoming very evident. The massive occupation of the coastline and the discharge and dumping of large amounts of solid and liquid wastes into the sea together with the excessive exploitation of natural resources, constitute a threat to the preservation of ecological balance and biodiversity, to the survival of its species and to the conservation of several sites of high natural value.
