Sažetak
The major cholinergic innervation for neocortical regions originates from the nucleus basalis magnocellularis (nbM). Lesions of the nbM are associated with an impairment of cognitive functions. Therefore, we have analyzed the influence of various acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEI) on passive avoidance in rats with bilateral electrolytic lesions of nbM. Wistar albino rats weighing 200-250 g were used. Bilateral nbM lesions were made by using a current of 1mA that passed a unipolar electrode for 30 sec. The rats started the passive avoidance test according the procedure of Ashford and Jones 15 days after the surgery. The passive avoidance behavior in the nbM-lesioned rats under the influence of various AChEI was measured. Drugs used were: physostigmine salicylate, galanthamine hydrobromide or tetrahydroaminoacridine hydrochloride. This study demonstrated that the tested AChEI were variably effective in reversing the memory deficit in the lesioned rats.
