Sažetak
The genus Alyssum L. (Brassicaceae) comprises over 170 species primarly centered in SW Asia, with a rich representation in the Balkan peninsula and in the Caucasus and adjacent parts of the Middle East. Aurinia comprises nine species of perennials, found from central and southern Europe to the Ukraine and Turkey. These two genera seem to be problematic in the Croatian flora in which the boundary of certain species is not completely clear due to the polymorphism of morphological characters. To date no comprehensive chemotaxonomic study has been done on the investigated taxa. Sixteen samples of Alyssum and Aurinia sps. have been collected from different localities in Croatia. TLC fingerprint analysis revealed considerable amounts of flavonoids in the methanolic extracts of the aerial parts of the different samples. However, due to the complex composition of the flavonoid patterns no single compounds could be identified by TLC analysis only. Hence, further investigations were carried by a combination of LC separation with both, PDA and electrospray mass spectrometric detection, which has been proved as a powerful tool in flavonoid analysis. Highly glycosidated flavonols, some of them with additional cinnamic acids attached to the sugar residues represented major compounds and di- and triglycosides of kaempferol, quercetin and their methyl ethers could be identified. Considerable differences between species of the A. montanum aggregate as well as between other Alyssum and Aurinia sps. could be detected. Additionally, from a pharmaceutical point of view a detailed study of flavonoids in these taxa seems to be promising as previous analyses of Brassica sps. afforded similar compounds which have been related to prevention of cardiovascular diseases mainly due to their antioxidative properties.
