Sažetak
The issue of unemployment is one of the most common contemporary economic problems of market economies. Transition economies are especially prone to high unemployment persistence. This paper analyses the existence of unemployment disparities among Croatian regions. These disparities are of significance size but they have been continuously growing during the transition period. It indicates the appearance of so-called Regional Equilibrium of Unemployment. There is a strong significant negative relationship between the regional rate of unemployment and the level of development measured by regional gross domestic product per capita. The educational structure also influences the existence of regional unemployment differentials. A higher share of the employed population with a secondary education is associated with a lower unemployment rate. The opposite is true for the relationship between the share of the employed with basic education and regional unemployment rates. Although the majority of the empirical research in other countries confirmed the significance of demographic structure with regards to regional unemployment differentials, this was not the case in Croatia. These results implicate the absence of convergence in regional unemployment rates and the necessity for well designed and coordinated regional policy.
