Sažetak
Sediments of the River Deû le canal were investigated in order to evaluate the level of their pollution by toxic metals and their capacity to still adsorb pollutants released from toxic wastes. The measurements of metal concentrations in sediments and in suspended matter have shown high concentrations of Pb, Zn, Cd and Cu. However, sediments do not release large amounts of those metals in water either under oxic or suboxic conditions. On the other hand, slag particles from lead and zinc smelter do release large amounts of lead, zinc and copper when interacting with the river water. Cadmium, however, although present in slag, is apparently not being released. The high concentration of Cd found in sediments probably originates from some other industrial source. When sediment is mixed with slag, the amount of metals released in water is much smaller than in the case when only slag is present in water. Evidently, although highly polluted, sediments are still capable to adsorb and retain significant amount of these metals. The capability of sediments to adsorb some of the pollutants (Pb) seems to be enhanced in anoxic conditions.
