Sažetak
The vertical concentration profiles of manganese in the water column at the vicinity of the former ferromanganese factory (Šibenik Bay, Krka river estuary) were determined. The new sensitive method for the determination of manganese by CSV on boron-doped diamond electrode with ultrasound enhanced accumulation was employed. The Krka river estuary is highly stratified, with the measured salinity gradient of 20‰ within a half meter of the freshwater-seawater interface (FSI). The measured manganese concentrations are within the range of 60-1300 ng L-1. Assuming that very high content of the manganese was found in the sediment at this sampling site (2.7%), and that no increased concentration of manganese in the deeper seawater layer was observed, the processes of remobilisation or dissolution of manganese from the sediment have not significant role on the profile of manganese concentrations in the water column. However, the increased concentration of manganese at the FSI was detected, which is consequence of the accumulation of the organic matter and mineral particles at this layer. The total concentrations of Cd (5-13 ng L-1), Pb (70-230 ng L-1) and Cu (375-840 ng L-1) were measured. Values of all metals are comparable with the concentrations found in the unpolluted estuaries. Generally, Mn, Pb and Cd ions show the increase of concentrations in the FSI, while copper concentration profile indicates anthropogenic pollution in the brackish layer caused by agriculture activities and by the paint with copper basis used as an antifoulant biocide for the ships. UV-digestion has considerable impact on the concentrations of Mn and Cu, while small influence was observed for Pb in the seawater layer and no effect on the concentrations of Cd. Presented results confirm that the new method for the determination of manganese by CSV on boron-doped diamond electrode with ultrasound enhanced accumulation can be successfully applied to natural waters.
