From the 4th to the 6th centuries, thus from the first intimations of the ruin of the Western Roman Empire to attempts to restore it, Christian art, as the last standard - bearer and heir of classical culture, went through all phasses of development, from its first modest beginnings to the golden age of flourishment and brilliance in the age of Justinian.
