Sažetak
According to observations made by Ivica Sušić from Skradin, a pair of Mute Swans nested for the first time in the area of the Krka River near Skradin in 2002. The Mute Swan is relatively new nesting species in Croatia whose nesting was recorded for the first time in 1990 at the Croatian part of the Ormoško Lake [Lesinger, A. (1994): Mute Swans, Cygnus olor, in the Međimurje region in Croatia. - Troglodytes 7: 69]. Since then it has the status of a regular nesting species which increases the number of nesting pairs by expanding into suitable habitats towards the Croatian east and the south reaching the rivers of Kupa and Sava. In 2002 the clutch was placed in reed on the left bank of the Krka River halfway from Skradinski buk to Skradin, and contained six eggs. In the same year there were five hatched and fledged young. Most probably the same couple nested in 2003 when eight young hatched from eight eggs, though only six survived, and in 2004 when nine young hatched from nine eggs and eight survived. The particular family of Mute Swans had been observed several times at different parts of the Krka River around Skradin between May 2nd and 10th 2004. The Mute Swan pair dwells at the Krka River in the winter and is fed by local population. The young birds don't spend winter there. This is the southernmost nesting area of Mute Swans in Croatia.
