Sažetak
After the advent of composite materials, particularly wood-based ones, a new era began of intensive use of synthetic components in combination with wood for furniture production. Due to the ever-increasing scarcity of solid wood and the substantial expansion of the world´s population, wood-based composite materials will be a long-term alternative to solid wood. Before the emission of formaldehyde from composite wood-based materials was detected, the main aim in the production of composite wood-based materials was to achieve improved mechanical characteristics and less swelling of such composite materials. After the detection of formaldehyde from composite wood-based materials, particularly from particleboard, the basic requirements relating to particleboard quality were thoroughly changed. Protecting the population from the potentially carcinogenic impact of free formaldehyde became a priority when designing the chemical and technological characteristics of these materials. The proportion of formaldehyde in synthetic formaldehyde based resins is being intensively lowered, and the amount of the minimising of free formaldehyde results in poorer mechanical characteristics of these materials because of the inferior adhesion and cohesion features of synthetic resins made with a reduced proportion of formaldehyde, and also in significant swelling of wood-based composite materials. In the new circumstances it was hard to meet the requirements of the then existing standards. Hence it was imperative that new standards be developed allowing for more varieties of materials in terms of mechanical characteristics and swelling but with limited formaldehyde emissions for all the types.
