Sažetak
Geographically, shape of Croatia looks pretty strange. Some parts of the country are not easy to access, especially during the winter time. There are also 718 islands, and a lot of problems in healthcare utilization for people living there. In 1999. the Croatian Academy of Medical Science (CAMS) initiated a project titled Virtual Policlinics – Telematic System of Medical Consultation for Islands. The system was based on a private doctor's office located at the island of Cres, and initial equipment being in this office. Objective of the project was to gather experience in teleconsultation practice for primary health care. Project started with modest ICT technology. After the very good one-year experience, CAMS extended the project with additional equipment and some other Adriatic islands (Losinj, Krk, Solta, Brac, Vis and Mljet). The project was supported by both Ministry of health and Ministry of building and rebuilding as well as by the Croatian Health Insurance Institute. Many sponsors and donators took place in this project. Standard ICT equipment of any doctor's office at islands consists of PC, printer, scanner and digital camera, as well as appropriate software. Medical specialists from several health institutions in Croatia were included as consultants (Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Rijeka, Split, etc.). Some consultants from abroad were included later.
