Sažetak
One of the currently most active areas in electromagnetics deals with artificial materials that support propagation of backward-waves ('left-handed', 'backward-wave' or 'double negative' materials). This talk reviews some representative research results published in period since experimental introduction of 'backward-wave' materials (May 2000) until now, as well as the historical precedence (which can be traced back to 1908). The talk will cover physical background of backward-wave materials, theoretical and experimental results and potential applications. Particular emphasis will be given to the experimental investigation of meta-materials and accompanying applications at University of Zagreb. It will be stressed that there have been very few successfully realized engineering applications of backward-wave materials so far, mainly in technology of planar microwave circuitry. The other applications, which would involve more striking phenomena such as negative refraction, 'amplification' of evanescent waves and 'super-resolution' imaging, although already proposed, are yet to be seen.
