Sažetak
The opening of the Art pavilion in 1898 with the first Croatian Salon exhibition at a complex moment in history had a far-reaching impact on Cratian culture. The two evants marked the end of the old and the beganning of a new life for Croatian art. Croatian Salon promoted youg art that, seceding from the old Society of Art and academic conventions, attempted to catch up with Europe; Art Pavilion provided zagreb with representaive exhibition venue that has since served for promotion for new art. The new art wave was set in motion by the changing attitudes of the yung generation of painters and sculptors aducated at the art schools all over Europe. The cultural and political situation in the country aided the secession of young artists. Shown at the Croatian Salon were the works of all true members of the Society of Croatian Artists(Alexander, V. Bukovac, M. Crnčić, B. Čikoš Sessia R. Frangeš mihanović, O. Iveković, F. kovačević and R. Valdec) as well as their guests.Their works are characterized by variety of motifs and exuberances of colors. More than actual style, it was the thematic scope and the diversity of motifs and indicated a new artistic trend. Beside traditional portraits, still lifes, landscaps and genre scenes, specific were allegories with mythological, literary and national revival motifs. Symbolis was the metaphoric idiom of complex allagories, but on the whole the exhibition demnstrated variety of individual expressions of reality, poinilist techniques and intimist warmth. It was a true renaissance of young Croatian art, the pivotal point in the birth of modern movement.
