As the main representative of functionalist structuralism, Andre Martinet is one of the key figures of the 20th century linguistics. This chapter elaborates the main ideas he developed such as the need to study each language in its own functional framework, primary and secondary articulation as specific features of human language, diachronic problems in historical linguistics as well as methodological and practical issues in language learning and acquisition. A short biography is added at the end of the chapter.
