Sažetak
Over an eight year period, 111 biopsies of small intestine mucosa were performed and the activities of disaccharidases (lactase, maltase and sucrase) and alkaline phosphatase were determined. Patients were divided into 6 groups: 1 - control group with normal histological and enzymatic findings, 2 - patients with postenteric syndrome, 3 - patients with GE - 1st biopsy, 4 - patients with GE, 3 - 4 weeks on gluten - free diet - 1st biopsy, 5 - patients with GE - 2nd biopsy after 18 - 24 months on a gluten - free diet, and 6 - patients with GE - 3rd biopsy after reintroduction of gluten into a diet. All the examined enzymes but lactase showed rapid changes and a significant decrease in the acute phase of the disease with recovery after an 18-24 months long diet. Alkaline phosphatase activity changed quickly after 3-4 weeks on a gluten-free diet. In this group, disaccharidase activities remained low. This finding suggests that ALP is a better marker of functional recovery of small-intestinal mucosa than disaccharidases.
