Sažetak
In the mid-fourteenth century king Louis I of Anjou was given the opportunity to expand his rule to Dalmatia. After a protracted and skilfully managed diplomatic campaign, the Ragusan envoys succeeded in concluding a special treaty with the king, the so-called Visegrad Treaty which laid the foundations of the autonomy and overall prosperity of their city. The relations between the city and the Hungarian kings were so harmonious that RAgusan chroniclers began to reinterpret the start position of Hungarian sovereignty, claiming that the Ragusans had accepted the Hungarian king out of pure loyalty. Diplomatic humility actually meant diplomatic effectiveness, because it achieved the goal and preserved the Republic of Dubrovnik for many centuries after the fall of the Hungarian kingdom.
