Sažetak
The aim of our study was to examine the detection rate of clamydial infections in various male and female biological samples by the solution phase probe hybridisation. Study population consisted of 2077 patients, 1122 females (median age 38, range 16-85), 955 males ( median age 36, range 17-75) who visited the Outpatient clinic for urogenital infection in Zagreb during 2001. Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) was detected in female cervical and urethral swabs, in male urethral swabs, ejaculates, expressed prostatic secretions and prostate biopsies. The detection rate of Chlamydia trachomatis was 11, 6 % in females and 7, 9 % in males. In cervical swabs, the detection rate was overall 12, 3 % and in urethral swabs 6, 5 %. Chlamydia trachomatis was detected more frequently in cervical swabs (18 positive) than in urethral swabs (6 positive) collected at the same visit in 79 females. The positive results were found in 9, 4 of male urethral swabs, 10 % of ejaculate samples, 7, 0 % of expressed prostatic secretions and 17 % of prostate biopsies. Conclusion Chlamydia trachomatis was detected more frequently in female samples (11, 6 % versus 7, 9 %). The results showed that chlamidya trachomatis could be successfuly detected not only in cervical swabs but in “ male samples” ( urethral swabs, ejaculates, expressed prostatic secretions and prostate biopsies) as well. Cervical swabs in females were more sensitive for detection of chlamydia than urethral swabs by the solution hybridisation method.
