Sažetak
The study was carried out at the experimental station of the Tobacco Institute of Zagreb at Pitomaca, in 1983-86, on semigley of unstable structure, with unfavourable texture and growing compactness, notably on eluvial and illuvial horizons. The treatments included the ploughing depths of 20, 30 and 40 cm and subsoiling of 0 or 60-70 cm. Deeper tillage (deep ploughing and subsoiling) resulted in an increase of total porosity in the subsurface from 39.6% to 48.1%. However, due to unfavourable physical properties of the soil, the achieved looseness was quickly lost. Increased porosity improved the water-air relationship in the soil. Air capacity of the eluvial horizon went up from 4.6% to 12.1%, which resulted in better root development and higher leaf yields. Deep tillage (subsoiling and ploughing at 40 cm) resulted in a decrease of the soil resistance to compression and of compactness in subsurface layers. The effects of subsoiling disappeared after two years. Due to above-mentioned physical properties of the soil, it was concluded that greater attention should be paid to loosening immediately after winter and to inter-row cultivation in tobacco vegetation
