Sažetak
In the area where tobacco is grown in Podravina, in northern Croatia, tobacco is grown on several types of soil. The soils often have an acid reaction and a low magnesium content. Correcting the pH value improves microbiological activity, as well as reducing and eliminating calcium, magnesium and molybdenum deficiency and manganese, aluminum and iron toxicity. It also increases the availability of phosphorus and the efficiency of potassium in tobacco nutrition. This has been demonstrated by research results obtained over a three-year period on acid soils in the area where flue-cured tobacco is grown in Croatia. Along with a non-fertilized variant, fertilized only with mineral fertilizer, the tobacco was fertilized with 2 and 4 tons of lime, 2 and 4 tons of dolomite lime and 3 and 6 tons of dolomite. Thus the experiment involved 6 treatments randomized in four repetitions according to the block method. The mineral fertilizer applied increased the tobacco yield significantly. As soon as after the first year there was an evident positive influence of calcification on the tobacco yield. All the materials applied, depending on the dosage, reduced the soil acidity and the presence of mobile aluminium. Higher dosages with smaller particles were more effective. These results indicate that soil in Croatia should be calcified and its pH corrected to an optimum 5.5-6.0. The amount and kind of material should be determined on the basis of the chemical and physical properties of the soil. The justifiably highest tobacco yield was found in the variant where 6 tons of dolomite had been applied. The results obtained show that on the soil where the research was carried out, materials containing Mg as well as Ca are preferable because the Croatian soils on which tobacco is grown are poor in these elements.
