Sažetak
During the 1993-1996, trials were carried out in the Virginia tobacco cultivation area of Northwestern Croatia. Alongside a control with non-irrigated tobacco, the research included procedures with irrigation starting when plant height reached knee-high, when topping procedures were reached and there was also a procedure in which there was a continued irrigation from the moment the tobacco was planted out. This research has shown the dominant influence of the amount and distribution of precipitation during vegetation on the agronomic characteristics of tobacco. Variations in yield compared with a four year average ranged with non-irrigated tobacco from a negative 21 % in 1996 to a positive 22 % in 1993, and with maximum variation with irrigated tobacco of 33 % and 30 %, respectively. The increase in yield with irrigation, from 18 to 21 %, was statistically significant in 1995 only. In the four year research average, trends towards increased yields of 5 - 8 % and visually gauged better dried leaf quality of 3-7 % as compared with non-irrigated tobacco were established. With respect to the chemical contents in the leaf of irrigated tobacco, a significantly lower content of total N, 11, 1 - 13, 5 %, and nicotine, 29, 4 - 30, 6 %, and a greater content of reducing sugars, 3, 4 - 9, 7 %, were established.
