Sažetak
Clenbuterol is a synthetic selective beta-2-adrenoceptor agonist widely used as a bronchodilator in veterinary medicine. When administred in 5-to 10-fold therapeutic dosages, clenbuterol has marked growth-promoting effects in slaughter animals, reduces body lipids, and promotes muscle growth. Previous reports have shown that the administration of clenbuterol influences the hormonal and metabolic state of pigs. The aim of this study was to assess whether acute exposure of female pigs to a growth-promoting dose of clenbuterol could influence serum insulin, glucose and non-esterified fatty acids concentrations. The acute clenbuterol treatment influenced serum insulin, glucose and non-esterified fatty acids concentrations, since their mean levels were significantly higher. The results obtained suggested the acute treatment of pigs with a growth-promoting dose of clenbuterol showed a notable lipolytic and glycogenolytic effects.
