Sažetak
EFFECTS OF HYPOXIC HYPERVENTILATION ON THE FLIGHT CREW MISSONI E, GOLUBIC J, BORKOVIC M, Faculty of Transport and Traffic Engineering University of Zagreb, CROATIA INTRODUCTION The danger of hypoxic hyperventilation in aviation is obvious. This problem should be considered with great care. The flight crew should pay special attention to avoid such a situation. One should remember that fatigue and stiffness of muscles may result in loss of consciousness and the possibility of hyperventilation. GENERAL SYMPTOMS During the climb to high altitudes there is a point at which the breathing rate changes. In some individuals this occurs already at the altitude of 1300 metres. Along with deeper breathing the oxygen in the lungs is increased, since low breathing results in very little fresh air passing through dead air spaces. Further increase in altitude to over 3000 metres results in deeper breathing, i.e. the lung ventilation is increased by 20-100%. Medical analyses have defined the symptoms which point to hyperventilation. It has been concluded that in the state of hyperventilation the body begins to tremble, the heartbeat is disturbed, the person suffers from ache in the chest and thorax, there are changes in the vasomotor characteristics, dryness of the mouth, inflammation of the mucous membrane, stomach problems, gas on the stomach, ache in the muscles and joints, spasms in the muscles of the ankles and irritability and restlessness. Apart from all this the following symptoms can appear as well: blurred vision, dim picture, visions and hunger. All these symptoms of hyperventilation can be very deterring on the flight quality and safety. Therefore, hyperventilation must be considered with great attention and care in aviation medicine and one has to be aware of its harmful effects on the flight safety. CONCLUSION Flight and cabin crew must be made aware on time and must have good knowledge of the symptoms and the effects of hyperventilation, in order to be able to cope well and successfully in case it occurs, and to be able to eliminate it.
