Sažetak
This paper analyzes individual qualities of Croatian managers who run small hospitality enterprises, based on detailed interviews conducted with 99 managers. The research covered three groups of qualities possessed by managers: general qualities (gender, age, education, experience and tradition), motivation for starting their own business and personal traits, and their attitudes towards business and the problems they face in their everyday work. The research shows that a typical manager of a small hospitality enterprise in Croatia is a male with a secondary school education, aged between 31 and 50, with no previous experience as a manager. On average, his business employs up to five other workers. They are most often motivated to start their own business by the desire to change their lives and to gain financial independence. This correlates with the results of similar research done abroad.
