Sažetak
The starting point of this conference is the alarming state of the landscape in the territory of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County. Several factors have contributed to the growing deterioration of the environment in this area. During recent years, the fires occurred even several times a year, thus heavily affecting large tracts of the countryside. Besides causing enormous damage and erosion, these events also endanger lives and livelihood of the local population. The degraded landscapes also have an indirect, but very high impact on tourism. All this requires an integrated contemplation of revitalisation that considers all the environmental aspects. First of all, the conditions must be created that will stimulate return and growth of the population and the consequent recultivation of the countryside. Clearly, this above all refers to agriculture. The main objective of this workshop is to highlight the principles along which sustainable development could be pursued. This concept is frequently misunderstood ; nevertheless, we find it appropriate to use it as a guideline, not only for the man made, but also for the natural systems in landscape and for urban development.
