Sažetak
The music collection of the Ursuline nunnery in Varaždin contains, among other early manuscripts and the newer part of the archives, a series of 19 early music prints with 201 compositions. They are editions of church music by Bavarian publishers Johann Jakob Lotter (and successors) from Augsburg (16 in all), Johann Baptist Lang from Regensburg (2) and Johann Jacob Luzenberger from Burghausen (1), printed between 1728 and 1763. The authors of this music are South-German late-Baroque church composers Marianus Königsperger (1708-1769), Johann Valentin Rathgeber (1682-1750), Johann Anton Kobrich (1714-1791), Gregorius Rösler (1714-1775), Benedict Fasold (1718-1766), Benedict Geisler (1696-1772) and Alberich Hirschberger (18. century). Genres represented in these collections are: Masses, Requiems, offertories, Te Deum, « ; sacred songs» ; , hymns, cantatas, litanies, church symphonies, and antiphons. Most of them require a modest performing ensemble of 1-4 voices, two violins and an organ, but can be enlarged with additional ad libitum winds and timpani. Among 19 collections (consisting of only vocal and/or instrumental parts), only six have been preserved in a complete form, six additional have all obligato parts preserved, and seven are incomplete. According to the RISM lists, all these editions are rare copies both in Croatian (most of them are the only ones preserved in this country) and wordly terms: they are between the fourth and the 22nd copy known in the world, but among the completely preserved collections two are the second preserved ones (RISM sigla: K 1010 and K 1258), three the fourth (RISM sigla: H 5645, K 1238 and R 295) and one the fifth (RISM siglum: K 1008). This collection very probably contains the earliest (Baroque) repertory of music-making in the nunnery church (c1730-70), which was later followed by the (early-Classical) repertory which was produced for the nunnery needs by the members of the so-called Varaždin composers' circle (Johann Werner, Leopold Ebner, and Jan Křtitel Vanhal [Wanhall] during his staying in Croatia), active in the c1770-1830 period. However, the possibility cannot be excluded that this music might also be the last and only trace of the Varaždin Jesuit music collection, dissolved after 1773. According to all quantitative and qualitative indications, this corpus of Bavarian 18th-century music prints, preserved in the Ursuline nunnery in Varaždin, represents a musico-documentary entity from earlier periods with undoubtful national cultural value, but reaching out also beyond national boundaries.
