Sažetak
Ochratoxin A (OA) is nephrotoxic fungal metabolite occuring in food and foodstuffs, associated with the aethiology of Balkan endemic nephropathy. It is one of very few mycotoxins found in human blood. The aim of this work was to assess human exposure to OA by measuring its presence in the blood fo humans from endemic and non-endemic areas. Int this work we present results obtained ower ten-year period in the hyperendemic village Kaniza and control villages. Analysis of ochratoxin A in human blood samples was performed with the spectrofluorimetric method with carboxipeptidase A. A total of 6910 samples ere analysed. The incidence of OA in human sera from endemic village was found to be from 0.2 to 4.5 % (from 2 to 50 ng/ml sera), while in control villages from 0.4-2.4 % (from 2 to 10 ng/ml of sera). From persons in whom OA was found, blood sampling was repeated after one week. In 11 samples (out of 14) OA was detected again. The positive finding of OA in human blood raised the question of the most important source of exposure among different food commodities. Mean value of OA contamination obtained in our study points to dry beans as a foodstuff most frequently contaminated with OA. The analysis of results demonstrates that the frequency and concentration of OA in human blood fluctuates from year to year.
