Sažetak
The purpose of this paper is to present the European Language Portfolio, a project launched by the Council of Europe in 2001 with the aim of establishing the overall standards of foreign language acquisition and assessment in regard to the ongoing process that should lead to united, multicultural and multilingual Europe. These standards will be thoroughly examined through two basic functions of the portfolio, namely, the pedagogic and the reporting function. The former will include the aspects of learner’ s motivation, autonomy, and intercultural experience, and the latter will focus on official documentation on one side, and on any kind of evidence that would support assessment and self-assessment of the learner’ s language skills and intercultural competence, which are rarely tested through examinations and even less recorded in official documents. As the European Language Portfolio offers certain autonomy in its development considering and respecting cultural and educational differences and experiences in numerous European countries included in the project, a special emphasis will be put on the situation in Croatia, its achievement so far, and particular problems encountered in the process of the project implementation.
