Sažetak
The paper gives the analyses of the preparation, achievements, prospects and challenges of Croatia's integration into the EU and the position of the country after the current enlargement takes place. It estimates consequences of the first wave of Eastern enlargement on South-Eastern European countries as well as the future of SEE region and its potential role in shaping new Europe. It evaluates the position of Croatia, facing the challenge of the next phase of relations with the EU, together with the possibilities of the country to achieve the candidate status, start negotiations for the full membership and to catch up with the candidate countries (Romania and Bulgaria) in the continuation of enlargement. The conclusion is that the 2004 enlargement itself will have strong implications on internal functioning of the EU, as well as on the third countries. It is difficult to make clear estimation of potential implications of the current EU enlargement on the SEE countries due to the fact that the enlargement to ten East European countries is perceived as a process, which has to be continued, rather than it is a final step of European unification. Therefore, the key issue for SEE countries is the potential impact of future candidate status, together with the implications of continuation of enlargement.
