Sažetak
In medicine, knowledge is acquired mainly through demonstrations and laboratory work. This becomes more evident in physiology, which studies dynamic processes in organisms. Electrophysiology, as a part of physiology, is proven to be a demanding task for classical teaching methods therefore it requires simulations as an integral part of lectures and demonstrations. Computer simulations offer new and innovative approach to presentation of knowledge. Through multimedia and interactivity computer simulations enhance student's interest and involvement, facilitating the learning process. In this project we have created a computer simulation program, PROSIG, for studying physiological functions that generate membrane potential. The program consists of five interactive modules, which guide student step by step to the understanding of membrane potential. In the first module student learns basics of "Diffusion potential" ; in module II student applies before acquired knowledge onto cell membranes to understand formation of "Membrane potential" ; in module III student learns basics of "Action potential" ; module IV, "Refractory period", simulates neuron's behavior when stimulated during action potential ; and last in module V "Voltage clamp" student digs deeply into the issue of membrane potential by learning molecular base of membrane conductivity. Each module is divided in tutorial and simulation part. Tutorial part provides basics on the subject of each module combined with richly detailed graphics and interactive animations. In addition, tutorial has detailed help about using program, fulfilled with animated examples. Simulation part is designed to be easy to use and require minimal starting knowledge both in fields of electrophysiology and computer usage. However, because simulations are based on professional programs it is possible to conduct numerous simulations in electrophysiology. Also simulations are contrived in a way to allow student to predict outcomes of changing variables before being given the solution by the program. This develops student's critical thinking and stresses understanding of the subject. In order to create useful teaching tool we have configured simple and intuitive interface. Also, for purpose to lead the student through the simulations, virtual lecturer is implemented in a face of tables with predefined values. Overall, the program is fully adapted for students to overcome problem of membrane potential therefore it is already included in "Manual for demonstrations in physiology" at Medical School in Zagreb.
